Irish American Invasion of Canada – Presentation by local historian Mike Russert
We would like to invite you to join us in the Cheney Library, Hoosick Falls, NY, on March 10th 2014, at 7 p.m. Local Historian Mike Russert will focus on the 1866 invasion of Ontario, Canada, which started in Buffalo by the Fenian Brotherhood. The talk will examine the background of the invasion, the organization of the Irish Army of Liberation, and the battles fought in the summer of 1866. We will learn how these events relate to the Hoosick Falls St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
Mike Russert was born and raised in Buffalo, NY, taught in Buffalo City schools for 10 years, prior to teaching in Hoosick Falls for 25 years. Mike was the coordinator of the New York State Veteran Oral History Program and is a member of their Company of Military Historians. He has been on the book review staff of the Civil War News since 1988.
This is Mike’s second visit to our Library. In the summer of 2013 we enjoyed a presentation and talk by him about author Michael Shaara’s book Killer Angels and also the involvement of Hoosick Falls in the Civil War.
